How Did North Carolina's Emerald Isle Get Its Name?

What do you envision when you hear the name Emerald Isle? Well, we guess that depends upon your perspective. If you're familiar with the area some of your initial thoughts mights be of pristine beaches and sun-drenched shores, fond memories of family vacations of summers past, or a Southern Outer Banks coastal locale with a laid-back lifestyle. If you're unfamiliar with the area, we're guessing that your initial thoughts might be a bit more inquisitive. A gem? A shade of green? Perhaps some Irish influence?

In case you are a bit unfamiliar with Emerald Isle, let's touch on a few of these latter thoughts. When it comes to gems, don't expect to find emeralds dotting the shoreline (though that would be nice). Our gems come in the form of sea shells, sea glass, and sharks' teeth.

As far as the color green, you'll see that here in the flora, the flecks in the water, and particularly in one of the local festivals (which we'll talk more about later). You may or may not know that Emerald Isle got its name from a consultant who was hired by the original developers of this part of the island. He requested a bird's eye view of the area from a plane and was struck by its uninhabited beauty—the green of the island highlighted by its surrounding blue, crystal-clear waters.

Now what about the Irish? As far as we know, there isn't any link between Emerald Isle and any of the initial inhabitants being of Irish descent. That doesn't mean you can't find your share of Irish fun, specifically in the month of March. If you've ever been here close to the St. Patrick's Day holiday, you have probably heard about the annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Day Festival. The Festival celebrated its twenty-first year this year, and it is a popular event attended by both locals and visitors. If you missed it this year, try to keep us in mind for next year! We think you'll find the atmosphere quite charming. If you're lucky, you'll attend it every year.

Here is a sampling of the Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Day Festival highlights:
  • Free parking, free admission.
  • Over 75 arts and crafts vendors.
  • Lots of great food vendors, a beer tent, and entertainment for all ages.
  • The popular Little Ms. and Mr. Leprechaun Contest for children (ages two through five).

Whether it's March or any time of the year, Sun-Surf Realty can assist you in finding the perfect vacation rental to suit your needs. Don't hesitate to ask us about event planning as well as our beach gear and linen rentals. We have so much to offer, and we look forward to serving you.
