Swansboro: "Friendly City by The Sea"

Emerald Isle is a quick trip over the bridge to the "Friendly City by The Sea", Swansboro.

Swansboro was founded in 1783 and is a historic waterfront community at the mouth of the White Oak River, where the river joins the Atlantic and flows past the Bear Island Beaches and is home to Hammocks Beach State Park. It offers a quaint "downtown" shopping area and is the host of several events: Arts by the Sea, Mullet Festival, Candlelight Shopping, Christmas Flotilla and the Summer concert series under the new pavilion.

Settlers first came to Swansboro in 1730 and founded an Indian village at the mouth of the White Oak River. The colonial port was incorporated in 1783 and was called Swannsborough in honor of Sam Swann, a speaker at the North Carolina house of commons. Originally, Swannsborough was a shipbuilding community and home to Captain Otway Burns. Burns and Swannsborough were the builders of the first steamboat constructed in North Carolina. The shipbuilding industry declined and Swansboro became a leader in the commercial fishing industry.

Take a stroll through town and have a beer or ice cream at the Church Street Deli. Listen to music under the new pavilion or sit on the docks and throw bread to the fish and the ducks. There are plenty of restaurants to chose from and awesome shops to browse.

When vacationing on the Crystal Coast plan to visit Swansboro. You will quickly discover why it is called, "the Friendly City by the Sea."

Your Sun-Surf Realty Vacation has so much to offer, including a little bit of history.

How Did North Carolina's Emerald Isle Get Its Name?

What do you envision when you hear the name Emerald Isle? Well, we guess that depends upon your perspective. If you're familiar with the area some of your initial thoughts mights be of pristine beaches and sun-drenched shores, fond memories of family vacations of summers past, or a Southern Outer Banks coastal locale with a laid-back lifestyle. If you're unfamiliar with the area, we're guessing that your initial thoughts might be a bit more inquisitive. A gem? A shade of green? Perhaps some Irish influence?

In case you are a bit unfamiliar with Emerald Isle, let's touch on a few of these latter thoughts. When it comes to gems, don't expect to find emeralds dotting the shoreline (though that would be nice). Our gems come in the form of sea shells, sea glass, and sharks' teeth.

As far as the color green, you'll see that here in the flora, the flecks in the water, and particularly in one of the local festivals (which we'll talk more about later). You may or may not know that Emerald Isle got its name from a consultant who was hired by the original developers of this part of the island. He requested a bird's eye view of the area from a plane and was struck by its uninhabited beauty—the green of the island highlighted by its surrounding blue, crystal-clear waters.

Now what about the Irish? As far as we know, there isn't any link between Emerald Isle and any of the initial inhabitants being of Irish descent. That doesn't mean you can't find your share of Irish fun, specifically in the month of March. If you've ever been here close to the St. Patrick's Day holiday, you have probably heard about the annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Day Festival. The Festival celebrated its twenty-first year this year, and it is a popular event attended by both locals and visitors. If you missed it this year, try to keep us in mind for next year! We think you'll find the atmosphere quite charming. If you're lucky, you'll attend it every year.

Here is a sampling of the Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Day Festival highlights:
  • Free parking, free admission.
  • Over 75 arts and crafts vendors.
  • Lots of great food vendors, a beer tent, and entertainment for all ages.
  • The popular Little Ms. and Mr. Leprechaun Contest for children (ages two through five).

Whether it's March or any time of the year, Sun-Surf Realty can assist you in finding the perfect vacation rental to suit your needs. Don't hesitate to ask us about event planning as well as our beach gear and linen rentals. We have so much to offer, and we look forward to serving you.
